Cows Beat Turkeys 8-6 as Dean Is Cut Down at the Plate in the Play of the Century

Turkeys 6, Cows 8

Courtice beats Tyrone 8-6. Write it down. Carve it somewhere.

The Cows score four in the first. The Turkeys answer with four of their own. Two heavyweights, toe to toe, in a backyard, on a Wednesday. Then the Cows hang four more in the second and the whole thing becomes a survival story.

Dan goes 6-for-6. Six hits. Six at-bats. Three home runs. A barrage inside a barrage. A man cannot do more than everything, and Dan does everything, and Dan loses. That is the cruelty of this sport.

Lee matches him stride for stride, 5-for-5 with a home run. Derek goes 4-for-5 with a long ball of his own. John adds three knocks. The Cows do not make outs. The Cows refuse.

Dean goes 3-for-6 with a home run, and then Dean tries for immortality. Third base to home, legs churning, the whole season on his back. The throw beats him. Dean is out. The rally dies on the plate like a moth on a porch light. You will tell your grandchildren about it, and they will not care, and you will tell them again.

"I was going the whole way, no hesitation, that's how I play," said Dean's teammate Kevin, who was on the bench and did not see the play.

Kevin finishes 1-for-6 with two punchouts. A rough night for a man carrying a legacy into week two.

"We knew we had to answer that four-spot," said Derek, who was asked what he wanted for dinner.

The scoreboard shows the Cows at 1-3 and the Turkeys at 1-3. Both teams sit two games back of nothing in particular. It is still very early.

Remember, these two played last Wednesday. Turkeys 9, Cows 8. One run. Now it is Cows 8, Turkeys 6. Two runs. A rivalry is being forged in real time, in a yard, between two clubs with identical records.

The Turkeys have now lost two straight. The Donkeys beat them 14-1 earlier in the day. Rock bottom has a basement.

Dean thrown out at the plate.
