Lee Steals a Souvenir, Beavers Steal a Loss: Cows 5, Beavers 4
BURKETON — For six weeks the Beavers have been selling this town on the idea that they are the league's grown-ups, the hard hats, the team that wins the ugly ones. Wednesday night they got the ugly one they asked for, and the Cows walked off with it under their arm.
Courtice 5, Burketon 4. Write it down somewhere the Beavers faithful can find it in February.
The Cows put two up in the first, the Beavers answered with a four-spot in the second that had the lawn chairs rattling, and then Courtice hung three in the third and that was the ballgame — except it wasn't, because the home side got one last swing. Chad, who had three hits in five trips and looked like the only Beaver all night who understood what a strike zone is for, hit the ball a mile. Game-winner. Walkoff. Legend. For about a second and a half.
Then Lee reached up and took it.
"I timed the jump perfect," said Lee, who did not time anything and was, by all accounts, falling backward with his eyes closed when the ball found him. Lee also went 5-for-6 with two homers, which is the kind of night that lets a man revise history at his leisure.
"It was gone off the bat," said Chad, who was standing on the spot where it was not gone, watching it come back.
Beau did his part — 3-for-5, two homers — and RyanP added a homer among his two hits with two strikeouts, which is a Wednesday. Derek went 5-for-7 for Courtice and nobody will remember.
The Beavers fall to 4-2 and remain in second behind the Donkeys, who keep winning while everyone else argues about catches. The Cows, who lost 12-6 to those same Donkeys and dropped one to these same Beavers last week, are 2-4 and will now spend seven days telling anyone who stands still that they're a dangerous club.
They aren't. But Wednesday, for one swing, they were lucky, and lucky plays in this league.
