Donkeys Win With 4-0 Shutout; No Home Runs Recorded by Either Club
ENNISKILLEN — The Enniskillen Donkeys defeated the Burketon Beavers 4-0 on Wednesday afternoon in one of the opening game of the season, a contest notable chiefly for the complete absence of home runs.
The Donkeys scored once in the first inning and three times in the second. The Beavers were held scoreless across all three of their half-innings.
Burketon managed three hits in total, one apiece from Rich, Beau and Chad, each of whom batted three times. Rich and Chad struck out gloriously once each. None of the three left the yard.
"I was seeing it fine, I just wasn't trying to put it out," said Beau, who went 1-for-3 and was, by the account of two people present, trying to put it out on every swing.
Chad's at-bats drew particular attention. Observers noted repeated efforts to drive the ball over the wall, none of which succeeded. He finished with one hit and one strikeout.
For the Donkeys, Chris and Austin each recorded three hits in five at-bats.
Chris was also credited by those in attendance with the defensive work that preserved the shutout, including at least two plays described as excellent by people not otherwise inclined to describe things that way.
"Honestly the defence was a team effort out there," said Chris, who was the only Donkey to make a play in the field that anyone thought to write down.
No home runs were hit by either team, a circumstance that has not been the subject of formal comment.
