Donkeys Survive 29-Run Farce, And Somehow This Is Considered Pitching
Wednesday night in Enniskillen produced the first extra-inning game of the season. Donkeys 15, Cows 14. Twenty-nine runs. Somewhere a pitching coach quietly closed the garage door and left the engine running.
The Cows jumped out 4-0, which in this league is roughly the same as scoring zero, then kept scoring — 2, then 4, then 4 more in the fifth — and lost anyway. That takes effort. The Donkeys, who had already kicked the Beavers around 17-6 earlier in the day, were held scoreless in the first, dropped a four-spot, then a six-spot, and closed it with five in the fifth. The top of the fourth inning was ended by a double play, an event so rare here that two spectators applauded out of confusion.
Derek went 8-for-10 with two homers and did not strike out once, which on any other team is a plaque and on the Cows is a loss.
"We did everything right except the part at the end," said Derek, who was not asked a question and was describing a game his team led by four separate times before finally losing it.
Austin answered with 6-for-9 and two of his own for the winners. Chris — now travelling under the name "Chris with a K," — hit three home runs and struck out three times, two of them looking. Three homers and two frozen called strikes is not a stat line, it's a personality disorder.
"Chris and I had a plan up there," said Austin, who shared no plan with anyone and whose teammate watched two pitches go by without moving the bat.
The Donkeys are 7-1 with five straight. The Cows fall to 3-5 and have now lost to this team twice, having already been handled 12-6 on the thirtieth. The Turkeys, meanwhile, remain 1-6 and are not mentioned here for any reason other than cruelty.
It was a good game. I'll admit that much and nothing further.
