Beavers Take Second Game of Wednesday Slate 3-1; Turkeys Held to Three Hits
BURKETON — The Burketon Beavers defeated the Tyrone Turkeys 3-1 on Wednesday evening, scoring all three of their runs in the bottom of the second inning and not needing their at bats in the bottom of the third, the game having ended.
The Turkeys' lone run came in the top of the second on a home run by Dan, described by multiple people standing near the hedge as a no-doubter to deep left center. League records indicate it is the first home run in the history of the Eastern Wiffle Ball League, a distinction that will hold permanently regardless of what follows.
Earlier, Dean drove a ball to deep left that was caught at or even in the fence by Chad, the Beavers' left fielder, who was reported to have left his feet. The play removed a run from the board and was characterized by several attendees as the play of the night.
"I lined it up the whole way and had it the second it came off the bat," said Chad, who had turned the wrong way initially and recovered only after the ball had begun descending.
The Beavers were paced by Rich, who went 2-for-4, and Beau, who went 2-for-3 in the only sub-four at-bat performance of the evening. Chad finished 1-for-4 with two strikeouts. The Beavers struck out five times as a team; the Turkeys struck out four.
RyanP went 1-for-4 with two strikeouts for Tyrone, the most strikeouts by any Turkey in the game.
"I saw everything well tonight and I didn't miss much," said RyanP, who missed twice.
The result splits the Turkeys' Wednesday, as they had earlier taken a 9-8 decision from the Cows. The Beavers likewise split, having been shut out 4-0 by the Donkeys in the day's opener. Both clubs now sit at 1-1.
The Donkeys, who also beat the Cows 5-0, remain undefeated at 2-0 and lead the standings. The Cows are 0-2 and have been outscored in both losses.
