So that's how the Enniskillen Wiffle Ball League crowns its first champion: with the 7-1 Donkeys standing around their own freshly painted field decals watching Burketon haul off the trophy.

Beavers 11, Donkeys 7. Four innings. Banners out, decals down, inaugural title handed to a team that finished 4-4 and arrived on a two-game losing streak. If you've been keeping a shrine to the regular season standings in your garage, now would be a nice time to take it down.

Beau was the entire show, and I mean the whole production — 5-for-7, three home runs, no strikeouts. Burketon put up four in the first, four in the second and three in the third, which in a four-inning game is less a rally than a eulogy. Chad went 6-for-6 with a homer. Six for six. Justin went 3-for-6 and spent three innings litigating an out call at first base like a man appealing a parking ticket to the Supreme Court. The call stood. It always stands.

"We just took it one at-bat at a time and stayed within ourselves," said Chad, who did not say this, having gone 6-for-6 and therefore never needing to stay within anything.

Enniskillen matched the first inning four-for-four and then produced nothing in the second, one in the third and a two-spot in the fourth that arrived the way dessert arrives after the restaurant has already closed. Austin was superb and irrelevant — 5-for-8, two homers, no strikeouts. Chris finished 3-for-8 with the only Donkeys strikeout of the day, and it came with the game on the line to end it. Chris with a K. The scorebook has a sense of humour even if nobody in Enniskillen does.

"It wasn't our night tonight. But we'll be back in this final next year with a different outcome." said Austin, who had visibly red messy cry eyes.

It was a good fall season and a good final.

The Donkeys were the best team in this league for two months. The Beavers were the best team for four innings. Only one of those gets engraved in the trophy.
